hello friends..

It has been quite a while since the last time we crawled out of the shadows long enough to share our current endeavors, or lack thereof. We are artists, therefore we are always creating, conceptualizing, and changing our plan, and it becomes a bit redundant to say, “we are working on songs” over and over again. That being said, we ARE working on new songs. Not too many of our initial attempts make it past the chopping block into the entree, but a few bits and pieces have and we are starting to have a bone structure of what might become our next album. I don’t want to sound overly dramatic, but if you have ever seen the films that depict an artist ripping up his canvas and shouting “IT’S NOT RIGHT! IT’S JUST NOT RIGHT!” then you have a general idea of what its like working on The Smiles and Frowns recordings. We do appreciate the ever patient listeners, desperate requests for new material, and continuous support. In the last year or so we veered from the path of productivity due to habitat changes, health issues, and general laziness, but is seems that we have found our way back and are again moving forward. cheers!

Invasion of the Spacepeckers

As a mode of distraction and a recommendation I present to you “Woodpeckers From Space” by Video Kids, off their album “Invasion of the Spacepeckers”. This song is what I consider to be the perfect combination of fantasy, silly, sexy, hip, toe tapper, pop brilliance… and it alienates the listener just enough to make it artistic. I discovered it while watching an episode of “Pingu”. The episode entitled “Pingu Helps with Incubating”. Who knew that Pingu was such a hipster..

Okay, get ready to geek out… I present to you Disasterpeace! (Rich Vreeland)

For those of you who have not had the pleasure to bleep along with these 8-bit masterpieces, you should really consider the opportunity right now. This music has obviously been manifested from the soul of a chip-tune master/modern composer and has literally knocked my socks off. Sure, it’s not for everybody, and it doesn’t easily accompany the average person as they fold their laundry or try to impress their date (although I would be impressed) whether or not I am a super nerd is beside the point, it is a real art form, and it is brilliant!

Here are a some of my favorites:

The Three Wishes (1955)

Hello,

It has been a while since our last update. We have been busy with The Peppermint Hill (Beaulieu Porch) release, chipping away at our new recordings, and navigating through our mundane existence in the shadows of everyday reality. I really don’t have any big announcements at the moment. Things are happening, but I hesitate to say what, because it’s too hard to know when life will manifest more music from “The Smiles…” That being said, we are conceptualizing the next album as more songs come together. Thank you again for your patience…

“The Echoes of Time” & “Mechanical Songs” appear on the soundtrack of a snowboarding video called “Paint it Red”

“Hello everyone out there. This is Christopher James, one half of “The Smiles and Frowns” (worlds all-time/sometime greatest/worst band).
We are working on the next set of songs for the new record and single. A vast majority of music is created to fuel human instinct to fall in love, and reproduce new humans. This record is being created to fuel human instinct to fall in love with concepts and ideas, and reproduce new concepts, and new ideas. Its an ugly filthy shameful and thankless job, but someones got to do it.
But this letter isnt about epic musical meanderings or any of that. Its about PANTS. Yes, thats right… PANTS.
For about a decade or more i have been in search of the perfect pair of mens bellbottoms (or flares). I found many kinds, but never were they as good as i wanted or hoped. There was always a problem. Too modern. Too baggy. Too itchy. Not enough room in the crotch etc etc. But, finally, i have found where a man can get a pair of flawlessly recreated flares that fit they way they should, look they way they should, and from any angle force the mind to agree that they are truly the “real deal” and not some stupid retro remake.
When i first ordered them i got them in the mail and they just looked kinda so-so. I wondered if it was going to be another disappointment in a long line of bell-bottomy disappointments. But after trying them on with the correct shoes i realized they were absolutely 100 percent flawless. Mesmerizingly well done. The cut is spot on and youll feel like a 1970s tv COP instantly. I dont know how they did it but they did it. Rarely in life can you give a perfect 10 out of 10 to a piece of clothing but in this case its easy. I suggest to anyone out there looking for these kinds of pants to go to www.fuzzdandy.com and check them out. Keep in mind that, although the pics on the site make the pants look awesome, in person, they are twice as brilliant looking. You really have to see them on yourself to catch the full drift of what the fine folks at Fuzzdandy have done. On a more personal note, i really hate when people blindly advertise anything and claim it to be great when really its mediocre or average at best. So thats why i dont do that. Cause i hate that shit. But this time, the praise is well deserved. On the site they have this to say about them: “We’ve worked hard trying to make the perfect flare & we think we’ve got these cock on. These beauties have been specifically designed by (proper) flare wearers for flare wearers.” And that just sounds like something anyone would say to sell a product, but it really sincerely is true. Because only someone who pays attention to detail and knows what to look for in a cut could have created these the way they are. There simply is no better flare to be found anywhere, on any site, in any mall or store. I know because i looked for like a decade.
So anyways, to anyone interested in some amazing stuff, including spot recreations of mens flares, i sincerely recommend you check out their site which is: www.fuzzdandy.com.

Hello Friends…If you didn’t know already, we run a mini record label called “The Peppermint Hill”, that was created for the purpose of releasing our own music. This gives us full artistic control and the ability to do just about what ever we want, including nothing, which is a nice thought to rest upon…although we ARE working on new recordings, and I’m sure that you all shall hear them, as soon as we are ready to let them fly from the tree.
In the Meantime, we decided to expand our label by releasing recordings by other artists that we adore. We are starting off with a band called “Beaulieu Porch”. They are from Salisbury, UK and they caught our attention with their psych-pop home-grown recordings and genuine nature. The release will be in the form of a 7″ vinyl record, which of course will come with the mp3 versions of the songs and a few bonus “Phantom Tracks” not included on the vinyl. You can read more about this release on our label page.

It is a historical day for The Smiles and Frowns… it is in fact, the official release of our debut album in the UK and Europe, August 16th. It is somewhat like a birthday for the album, or maybe a re-birthday, if you will. We are very grateful that Akoustik Anarkhy and Europe has embraced The Smiles and Frowns, with all of our audio warts and weird tendencies that cause us to battle an upstream swim through the harsh waters of popular music. These songs and sounds have been the product of our existence, purely manifested in the manner of our choosing. We appreciate all the willing ears that continue to consume our recording, and hopefully they will echo on within…

"The Nairobi Trio“ (1956)

This is The Nairobi Trio, a brilliantly executed, live action interpretation of a mechanical music box with performing apes…or as I like to see it…one of the coolest bands around. It was created by Ernie Kovacs, and was originally aired on ABC…imagine that. As you watch this try to get in touch with your inner mechanical ape and enjoy the wonderful little melody twinkling in the background. The second video is not a musical one, but it is just as mad…and I could not resist including it along side of the other one.

For those of you who have never heard the music of RW Hedges, this is your opportunity to get yourself into a brilliant album called “Almanac”. We are big fans of this album, and hope that all of our friends will dive deep into it, and enjoy it as much as we do. You can get the album on itunes and alsohere. Make sure to connect with him on his myspace or facebook if you enjoy it…

“Minsato Le, Mi Dayihome”
I don’t know a lot about this West African band, but I do know that I love to watch these strange puppets dance to their music. They seem to bounce around with a rather frighteningly believable charm. The Band is called Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou Dahomey and the wonderful song that they are playing is “Minsato Le, Mi Dayihome“
